Use both CamRanger and Helicon remote in very remote forest locations. I think Zyrene would have been just as good using the same remote control software. Helicon processes large data sets of over 150 to 500+ macro photos faster but does slow down dramatically using RAW files directly. Note: Zerene Stackers non pro version ships with the basic retouching functions Both Zerene Stacker and Helicon Focus can be bought as a pro version and a smaller and less expensive version. This was a cost savings to us as a self funded non profit. Both Helicon Focus and Zerene Stacker have their own retouching abilities. This first part of the review looks a simply using focus stacking, including. Stuck indoors, like many photographers (April 2020) he’s put together a series of short reviews looking at using the Helicon software in different ways. Landed up going with Helicon because we needed to have the ability to use the bundled tethering software available to us. The stacking allows for increased depth of field and is particularly useful for close-up and macro photography. So the free programs and the bundled basic stackers are not suited for macro photography. The stacking allows for increased depth of field and is particularly useful for close-up and macro photography. Don't need to use the editing features frequently but both worked reasonably well. Batch features of both programs also very easy to deal with. Thats why none of the available software solutions like Helicon Remote supports. Found the test results nearly identical with minor benefits from one or the other depending on the data set. Unfortunately Sony does not give external software access to the focusing. Without going into great detail, what is the overall experience among the UHH members? Thank you for your recommendations.ĭid fairly extensive testing with both programs leading into a major non profit technical project using D850, D810 and D600. The results of the different stacking methods in Helicon Focus: each stacking option is provided with a detail of a hairy leg and a part of the head with. Like programs such as CombineZ or Zerene Stacker, Helicon Focus is designed to blend the focused areas of several partially focused digital photographs to increase the depth of field (DOF) in an image. I’ve seen some guys on here mention Zerene so I downloaded a trial version today. It normally takes several rendering attempts and even further touching up in photoshop to get the desired results. I have downloaded the Helicon trial version but have not the Zerene version. 1 I’ve been using the pro version of Helicon for 3 years and while it’s much faster than photoshop for stacking, the results have been mixed. Notice that for the Olympus 60mm lens, shown below, with the subject at 19 cm from the sensor, in the first column on the left, closing the aperture alters the depth of field by less than a millimetre, although it has a very large effect when the lens is focused on infinity (last column on the right).I am debating between Helicon Focus and Zerene Stacker for my work. Please Log in or Create an account to join the conversation. You can sign up for a 30 day trial with them too. It is therefore helpful to find a depth of focus table for your (macro) lens in order to understand how varying the aperture size will affect the Depth of Field. Helicon Focus is the best by a long shot for me. The problem with choosing the optimum aperture for high resolution is that it produces a very shallow depth of field. Understanding the Effect of Aperture and Depth of Field for a Lens That information was obtained by reading a lab test review at. In order to create really high resolution and contrast macro images with a prime macro lens and focus stacking you might want to find the aperture that provides the highest central and edge-of-field resolution and ideally the lowest chromatic aberration.įor the Olympus 60mm macro the optimal aperture is about F5.6. Understanding (Macro) Lens Characteristics: Choosing the ‘Sweet Spot’ for Aperture Hints, Tips and Recommendations: Focus Stacking The Witch King gets bumped up a level to a Hero of Legend in Angmar armies, all Uruk Hai heroes in Assault Upon Helms Deep Legendary Legion lists can take six extra followers, etc so it is always worth reading the army special rules and any Legendary Legion special rules when choosing your army. Grima Wormtongue is an example (though you actually want to stick him on to an enemy character to use his ability) as are things like Drummers in Evil forces. May not be army leader but can be added to another heroes warband. Tier 5 – Independent Hero – Some guy with no followers. Orc Shaman on Warg plus a gang of Wargs is a staple warband in a number of Evil forces. Good for putting a small warband on the table and often with a special ability. These are generally unnamed magic casters, a few monsters, and minor combat characters. Tier 4 – Minor Heroes – 6 Followers and cannot be the armies leader. Forgeworld have added a lot of these models in the various supplements. Such models are very points efficient and great for leading a small force. There are a number of captain equivalents with names but with more Heroic Abilities and Might for not many more points at this level that are generally worth looking at, a lot of whom are things like named Orc characters like Mauhur or Gorbag. These minor heroes are often the glue holding big armies together, and in 4/500 point armies you may have your force led by one of the 2-3 heroes at this level that you’ve chosen. These are your jobbers, your captain and captain equivalents, the characters you have to google, that guy who was in that thing, you know, them, and people who don’t get introduced by name in the movie. Tier 3 – Heroes of Fortitude – 12 Followers. These are still big and important characters (some more so than some Heroes of Legend) and in sub-1000 point forces often the biggest hero in the force. This is models like Ringwraiths, Durbuz King of the Goblins, Galadriel’s husband that everyone forgets about, Eomer, Theodred, Gandalf the White, etc. Tier 2 – Heroes of Valour – 15 Followers. Tier 1 heroes are generally big expensive linchpins for your entire army who will be in the thick of the fighting, and get a big group of friends befitting their status. This is your Aragorn King Elessar, Theoden, Saruman, Balrog, Galadriel, Elrond, etc. Tier 1 – Heroes of Legend – 18 Followers and the Hero gets the Last Stand rule, automatically passing their first Courage test when the army becomes Broken. Some armies have special rules here that let heroes take more followers than they normally would, and I’ll give a couple of examples. The highest tier hero you have is automatically your army general, because the design team got sick of armies with Sauron or the Balrog being led by an Orc captain hiding behind a big rock for the entire game. In Matched Play army construction there are a number of different types of heroes, who can take a certain number of followers. Sauron leading a force including Balrogs in the First Age is too cool not to do, and Open/Narrative is there for you to do it. If you are playing Open or Narrative at the club or store, you need to talk to your opponent first about what to do in terms of scenario, and that’s always more complicated than ‘600 points ok?’ but often a rewarding way of playing. Tournament players are a minority of players, but a very vocal and online minority, whereas narrative players and people playing at home, doing their own thing, are very quiet about it online, but are thought to be significantly larger in numbers (with people who collect stuff, paint it and just display it being another large and generally quiet group). If you want to just play scenarios and do your own thing, this is a totally valid way to play and there is nothing wrong with it. In Narrative and Open Play you can basically do what you like, and the scenarios across the ME:SBG supplements feature a lot of forces not legal in matched play. If you are wondering what happens with siege engines like catapults, they are their own little warband that can’t be joined by anything else unless you are buying extra crew or whatever from the options in the army list entry for that unit. It’s made it a lot easier to navigate spaces where nerdy/geeky mouth breathers are waiting to rain on your parade. Ultimately, I think I have my jazz education to thank for this attitude. I will like the nerdy/geeky things that I like-whether casually or hardcore-and no one will make me feel like I’m not worthy of enjoying them. I don’t need them to allow me into their “inner circles.” When you “well, actually” me, I will shut *hand clap* you *hand clap* down *hand clap*. I don’t want any men that I encounter in nerd/geek spaces to forget that I’m a woman. I’m happy to report that I have mostly stayed true to that promise. When I started to really let me geek flag fly a few years ago, I promised myself I wouldn’t take what others thought about what I did or didn’t know about the things that I enjoyed so seriously. (And when you have popular artists like Robert Glasper insinuating that women can’t get jazz the way men do, will any woman ever be fully accepted as a true jazzhead?) *scoffs*) I thought that if I got good enough with the lingo and the studying and what have you, those old jazzheads would respect that I was there for the music just like they were. (I was one of a handful of women who came to shows regularly and the youngest one by at least a decade so, of course, some thought I was trying to bag one of the musicians. But I was never quite able to get them to forget that I was a woman. I hung with musicians and other jazz fans, critiquing the new music and waxing poetic about the old. I could name all of the personnel on most tracks, identify a quote (the playing of a well-known refrain from one song during an improvised solo on another) and commune with them about popular jazz pilgrimages that we’d all made across the country. As a result, I studied jazz albums like it was a course I needed to pass in order to graduate from college. If you let them, they will grill you about your knowledge of jazz, roast you when you get something wrong and mansplain everything. And now that I don’t go to as many shows as I once used to, I’m amazed at how much jazz fanboy policing I put up with all those years.įYI Jazzheads, especially old black male jazzheads, are as bad as comic book fanboys when it comes to the music they love. I’ve braved language barriers alone in a foreign country for live jazz. I’ve sat cross-legged in the living room of a one-bedroom apartment for live jazz (shout out to Al “Bug” Williams and The Loft Society!). I’ve been to the holiest of hole-in-the-wall bars for live jazz. How do you calm the adrenaline rushing through your veins when a band gets into a tune and is really swinging? For about five years straight, I lived and breathed jazz, and attended countless live shows. I’ve often wondered if the feeling that bubbles up in my chest when a band plays “Naima” or “In A Sentimental Mood” is what love feels like. It’s hard to explain the feelings I catch when I attend a live jazz show with really good musicians. However, it wasn’t until I got deep into the Cincinnati jazz scene that I fell in love with the art of the live jazz show…and subsequently learned what gatekeeping was. I bought jazz CDs through that Columbia House CD Club scam when I was in college and by the time I was in grad school, I was crate digging for jazz on vinyl at local record shops. In high school, my marching band director played John Coltrane and Miles Davis in his office, the notes wafting in and out of our practice room during our breaks. I was a teenager when I started to like jazz. One of the unadvertised benefits for people with next to no signal is significant battery life improvement. Now, the speeds are determined by what your internet is capable of pushing or pulling, but you can see they’re pretty decent. The one-bar picture is without the Airave, the full-bar is with. The speed test pictures show the before and after speed tests standing in the same location. Right now, my Airave is sitting at a friend’s basement apartment while she waits for hers to show. You can go Airave to cell tower and back to a different Airave, but if there’s no signal in between those two, the call will drop. Unfortunately, this does not work the same from Airave to Airave, so if you’re in a large office building you won’t be able to switch between the two. You can walk out of the range and you’ll hear yourself moved to another tower, the background sound will change slightly, and you’ll be able to move on. The Airave picks up and drops off almost seamlessly with the nearby towers. You’ll get random messages like, “The number or code you have dialed is incorrect,” which is short for “Check how it’s dialing this number.” +16155555555 may fail where 615555555 might work on the Airave, but both work on the tower. With the Airave, 2047k down, 710k upĪnother thing you’ll notice is that some of your contacts have to be stored strangely, i.e. I’m assuming this varies from ISP to ISP. It sounds like a different vocal codec, and if feels like there’s a little less lag. The audio also seems to have a tinnish background sound, but the quality is better than low signal quality. When the Airave is on and you’re connected, you get three beeps at the beginning of each call to let you know you’re connected. Before the Airave, it was about one out of five calls missed, and about the same for mute calls. I also never had what I experienced on regular towers of picking up and one person not being able to hear the other. I tried calling my phone over and over again from a landline while near the Airave, and every call came through in a ring or two. Unfortunately, the place where it takes the longest is also the place where I need it the most, so it’s still an issue of me walking in and plugging it in and popping open GrooveIP until such time as it gets the location lock. The longest time it took to grab a location and provision was about thirty minutes, and the shortest time was about four. There’s a GPS antennae extender that promptly turns into a tangle of wire if you move it from place to place, but luckily for me the Airave worked without any issues at all the locations I’ve tried it without requiring the long GPS wire attached. The Airave requires a GPS lock, then does some sort of provisioning with the nearest tower, and finally starts broadcasting a great 3G signal even if you’re in a basement. Without Airave, 216k down, 34K upįirst off, this does not appear to be a thing you can just take and pop in to any location you’re going. Now, I also have two locations I work at that have about a ton of metal between me and the nearest window, so this is primarily why I wanted to try this, but it worked the same at those locations as it did my house. Since receiving phone calls is actually something I require, and GrooveIP and my voicemail have been informing me I’m missing roughly a third of my calls, I decided to see if Airave could do anything for me. Indeed, I get full signal, but I miss calls left and right and have next to no 3G data speeds. Living right next to a Sprint cell tower, you wouldn’t think that I’d have much of an issue. The Airave is basically a portable Sprint tower that works by using your home’s internet connection and, presumably, a point to point data connection to the nearest Sprint tower to broadcast a 3G signal to up to six CDMA devices in up to a 5000-square-feet range. If you’ve been living in a basement, you might have heard of the Sprint Airave 2.5 in-home signal booster, because you probably have nearly no cell reception.
